1806: Historical Reproduction Sampler Chart by Leon
Conrad
The original sampler
on which this chart is based was finished in 1806, by a 7 year-old stitcher,
whose
initials were "A.C."/p>
The sampler is English and has a
number of typical features and some unusual spot motifs.
was traditional for young girls to
work samplers at school from quite a young age. Like this one, they would have
rows of alphabets and simple border motifs, which could serve as models from
which to use letters, and simple decoration on other items. Stitching a sampler
was also seen as a good way for young girls to learn the alphabet.
19th C stitchers had a wide variety
of patterns to draw upon for spot motifs - and the ones AC chose for this
sampler are unusually colourful and varied. They include a pelican, some dogs
and cats, large and small flowers and trees, various birds, including an owl, a
lion, a squirrel, and some geometric designs.
Unusually, also, the sampler is NOT
worked exclusively in Cross Stitch - some parts of the design being worked in
back stitch and eyelet stitch.
The design measures 147 x 144
stitches - stitched over 2 on 32 count evenweave linen, this sampler would
measure
around 23 cm square (c. 9.5 inches square).
It is offered in two colourways - an
antique colourway, which closely follows the faded look of the original as it
appears now, and an original colourway, which closely follows the original
colour scheme of the sampler, as preserved on the back of the work.
