This is one of the best beginner's guides to reversible blackwork I know of.

Not only does it reveal the mystery of how to make your work look the same on the back as the front in this technique, but there is the added pleasure of working from a chart inspired by an original 16th century source - Peter Quentel's Modelbuche of 1527, the first known printed source to refer to Double Running Stitch, which you will be using to stitch this design, as Spanish Stitch.

The choice of fabric and thread is left open - it can be stitched on a wide range of fabrics using a wide range of types and colours of threads. There is nothing to stop you stitching this design in space dyed threads on Aida fabric, or if you prefer, in black silk on fine linen.
