This sampler is one of a pair of traditional folk embroideries by Ukranian stitcher, Pelageya Gretchikha. Pelageya was born around 1910. She is Ukrainian and lived in the Ukraine for most of her life. She learned how to embroider as a child, and passed her skills down to her daughter, Antonina. They often stitched together and these samplers came from this bond between them.
It is inspired by a saying Pelageya remembered from her childhood in the Ukraine 'Ginya Gusi Do Vodie' - a call the farmers' wives used to use to call their Geese to the water to drink.
The sampler measures 150 x 248 stitches - it measures c 9.5 x 15.5 inches stitched over 2 on 32 count evenweave linen, or over 1 block on 16 count Aida fabric. It is charted for both DMC stranded cottons. and Kreinik Silk threads.
The chart booklet contains clear charts in black and white and colour, along with a full history of the embroideries and the stories which inspired them.
