"The Art of English Blackwork" by Jane Zimmerman
It’s finally here! The book I’ve been trying to get hold of for nearly a year now, ever since I came across it in the States for the first time in 2002. Everyone who has seen my copy in classes since has wanted one. This is the most incredible compendium of filling patterns I have ever seen – not only are all the classic traditional patterns there, but for every basic pattern, there is a whole spread of variations in every possible form imaginable, in many cases this goes over two pages!.
In addition, there is information on the historical development of blackwork, materials, stitches and techniques (comprising Back, Whipped Back, Outline, Crewel, Couching, Chain, Whipped Chain, Scroll, Coral Knot, Trailing, Split, Pekinese, Braid, Satin, Blanket, Closed Herringbone, Whipped Spider Web Stitches along with several needlelace filings as well). A good selection of laid filling patterns is included (the only blackwork book I know of to include these), two pages of pattern darning patterns, seeding, and pulled thread stitches. The graphs are all in black and white needlepoint format, with suggested stitch lengths given. However, (and this is where Ilse Altherr’s books come in), there is no section on how to work any of the patterns reversibly.
Nevertheless, I cannot rate this book too highly for people who enjoy stitching, and are always in search for that elusive ‘perfect’ filling pattern or stitch for a given space in a particular design. You need look no further than this book.
