THE NEW ELIZABETHANS
LEON'S PAGE
Leon Conrad founded The New Elizabethans in 1998. His work covers various techniques, including goldwork, blackwork and other counted thread techniques and free embroidery.
A chance encounter with a simple bargello cushion kit during a bout of German Measles got Leon hooked on stitching. While earning a living as a voice consultant teaching public speaking and voice production, Leon stitched as a hobby for many years, and slowly started to develop his own designs. When people saw them and wanted to buy them, he decided to publish them. In January 2000 he felt he was getting so much more enjoyment from stitching, he decided to switch careers and start his own design business, Leon Conrad Designs Ltd. He has never looked back since.
He has written many articles and reviews, and had designs featured in specialist magazines both in the UK and the US. He contributed a section on Blackwork Embroidery in the 'Essential Guide to Embroidery', Murdoch Publishing, April 2002. He is currently taking an MA Course in the History of Design and Material Culture in the Renaissance run jointly by the V&A Museum and the Royal College of Art, London.
Some of his works are shown below:
Midnight Garden (Free Canvaswork Design)
Blackwork Bumble Bee
Blackwork Strawberry
Elizabeth's Jewels I: Sinfonia dell'Aqua (Water Symphony)
