Traditional wooden slate frames have been used by embroiderers for around 800 years. They are the only frames recommended by The Royal School of Needlework. I've tried most of the others on the market, and have not found anything to match these.
Traditional slate frames keep your fabric taut and drum tight both vertically and horizontally, which is extremely difficult to achieve with a roller frame.
The frames come in various sizes and are fitted with high quality webbing. For historical settings, these frames can be supplied without webbing if required. This will allow you to lace around the 4 sides of the frame, in the manner shown in some period engravings.
Slate frame kits are currently available in 12 and 16 inch square and 27 x 18 inch sizes.
Or make up your own frame to suit a particular project - ranging from 8 x 12 inches to 49 x 28 inches, and many sizes and combinations in between to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect combination!
The term 'Heavy Duty' denotes a stronger construction which will maintain greater tension, and is suitable for larger projects which are likely to be mounted on the slate frame for a longer period. Heavy Duty Horizontal and Vertical components are designed to work together.
If you have not used a slate frame before, I respectfully recommend a Slate Frame Kit to start with. Each frame kit contains the following:
(1) A pair of horizontal bars with webbing attached for the top and bottom of the frame
(2) A pair of stretcher bars with holes in them for the sides of the frame
(3) A set of 4 solid wooden pegs designed so they will not fall out once in place
(4) A piece of backing fabric to fit the frame dimensions
(5) Lacing thread
(6) A pair of wooden dowels
(7) Full instructions on assembly and tips on use.
